With sportscar racing action about to start in 2026, what are the best documentaries to watch to prepare for the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the highlights of the motor racing calendar. There's a long history of filmmaking at Le Mans: it's been the focus of a handful of Hollywood films, and acting talent like Paul Newman and Patrick Dempsey have stood on its famous podium. So it stands to reason that it's also played host to dozens of documentary makers eager to show us the inner workings of one of the greatest spectacles in the automotive world.
In no particular order, here's our picks for the 5 best Le Mans documentaries...
Truth in 24

This is a time capsule of a Le Mans era gone by, set in the height of Audi’s dominance at the Circuit de la Sarthe. Truth in 24 follows Audi’s 2008 racing campaign and its attempt to take a fifth consecutive victory at Le Mans. Narrated by Jason Statham (randomly), there’s brilliant insight into the team, the drivers and the challenges faced with its R10 TDI.
As Peugeot enters the fray with its own diesel machinery, Audi is finally under pressure, and one of the LMP1 era’s great rivalries is set up. This documentary shows the final year of the R10’s run at Le Mans, and the nail-biting, rain-soaked race which saw out its life in competitive racing.
No Perfect Formula

The Cadillac V-Series.R is known for one thing: the sound of that 5.5-Litre naturally-aspirated V8. But it takes more than just an exciting engine to build a race car; No Perfect Formula charts Cadillac’s efforts to return to Le Mans for the first time in over 20 years at one of the most pivotal races in Le Mans history.
2023 is a year to remember for many reasons – Ferrari’s first win in 58 years being one of them – but it was also the year that the Hypercar class really came into its stride. Cadillac and its three entrants played a massive role in that, and this documentary shows just how gruelling the V-Series.R’s early life was. From its design to its early efforts in WEC and IMSA, we get to see everything that goes into running a modern top-class sportscar team.
Endurance

Le Mans and Nürburgring. On paper the two 24-hour events are very similar, but in reality they pose two very different challenges. Endurance explains just how difficult the two races are for one of the biggest names in motorsport: Porsche.
In 2019, the two events fell on back-to-back weekends, and we get to see the triumphs and turmoil across the week between them. Through the eyes of team members and drivers (including a young Matt Campbell), we’re exposed to every part of an endurance racing team as they fight for victories and the WEC GTE Pro Championship.
American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans

While it was perhaps one of Le Mans’ strangest entrants in recent years, Hendrick Motorsports’ ear-splitting NASCAR became a fan favourite when it occupied Garage 56 at the 2023 24 Hours of Le Mans. This documentary, directed by Brad Lockhart, brings viewers along as the Next-Gen NASCAR is developed from an oval racer to an endurance machine. Featuring interviews with drivers, mechanics, managers and pundits, we see the challenge of taking the most unlikely car to Le Mans. Oh, and there’s quite a bit of V8 noise.
Road to Le Mans

Have you ever wondered how hard it is to race at Le Mans as a gentleman driver? Produced by Porsche, this series follows the efforts of Hollywood star Michael Fassbender as he takes on the famous 24-hour spectacle. Across four seasons, Fassbender moves through the ranks of Porsche Cup and the European Le Mans Series, before eventually competing at Le Mans in 2022 in a 911 RSR-19.
The series concludes with a feature-length documentary charting the film star’s journey and his second assault on the race in 2023, the final year of the GTE class. Road to Le Mans provides enlightening behind-the-scenes access to endurance racing, and features some of Porsche’s most legendary figures, including Richard Lietz and Matt Campbell.
